Online Shopping Trends – Amazon

The epidemic of shopping form the convenience of your couch has swept across the nation in crazy ways. Over the last decade or so the online shopping revenue has increased dramatically. Big online companies have being to excel. Amazon sells everything from clothing to food to furniture and usually offers delivery within two days. This has become both a blessing and a curse in the same breath.

In a media driven world it’s so convienent to purchase things with the simple click of a button and is usually cheaper.  “A new study by Profitero, an online analytics platform, revealed that, on average, Amazon is 13% less expensive than its competitors.” Due to the mass amounts Amazon is purchasing, making and selling items their overall cost goes down, allowing them to sell it cheaper and make it more attractive for the buyer as well.

Another bonus for consumers to purchase off of Amazon is AmazonPrime. Prime is the packaged deal. It includes free two day shipping, unlimited video streaming, free e-books and access to Amazon’s other amazing services. With Prime it “offers consumers the option to schedule deliveries.“ Amazon has killed it with this online shopping world of memberships and perks and has began to overtake the traditional, local retail market.

Local retail has taken a major hit since the emergence of online shopping has taken off. Especially with the boom of Amazon, there has been a migration from workers in retail to Amazon employees. This has definitely hurt the local market and America has began putting their money into big, corporate businesses. This has affected unemployment, wage and overall local economies in major ways.

Amazon also sells a lot of items that are not directly made by Amazon services and there has been a risen concern from sellers as this happens. There has been complaints of Amazon taking away privileges, selling others items and not doing a great job with customer satisfaction. Some of these are things that come with selling items on a larger scale, but are also things Amazon can grow in.

This has even infused itself into the advertising and social media world. There are paid advertisements on Facebook and Instagram and even basic search engines and just this past year that has increased dramatically. As you can see from this statistic sheet the amount of paid Instagram ads over the last year has increased by 106%. That’s insane! The pull and the urge to beckon people to purchase items while on technological devices is clearly a target and probably because it works.

Overall Amazon has killed it in offering fast and mostly reliable online shopping services. As you can see from reports over the last decade their business has only expanded and their employee count grown!

Online shopping is a huge new turn in events as our world continues to lean this way and it has both it’s blessing and curses. It saves the consumer money, but may cost the local company their ability to pay and employee. It has been an adjustment over the least decade or so and will continue to be until we figure it out and catch a rhythm in economies.
